Recommended to buy Singapore metro card in airport if you plan to use metro. There are two kinds, one for residents and one for tourists.
Ask for assistance, it's hard to figure out which is which you know already.

Actually, the tourist version of the card just costs more and gives you some attraction discounts. Go to any 7-11 (or you can get it at the MRT (metro) station), and ask for an “ez-link” card. They’re not limited for residents, literally anyone can buy them. They come with some stored value, but you will most likely have to top up – top up machines take cash, and at MRT stops cards as well. You can use your ez-link balance to pay for purchases at 7-11 and taxis.

Cheers.
