When I was in Singapore for ICANN a few years ago, I got a cheap SIM
from a kiosk in the mall attached to the conference centre which gave
me more data than I could use in a week along with a voice and SMS
bundle.  For people with lives outside the IETF (rare, I know) it also
had a cheap dialaround option for calls back to North America.

No idea about iphone problems, on my Android phone I have to long back
into my Google account when I switch SIMs but then everything works
fine.

PS: These days VoIP using mobile data usually works but I find that
the voice quality can be a lot worse than actual phone calls.
