That's not my experience. Echo cancellation has not improved and cannot IMO.
The only improvements that have been made is when a room contains multiple microphones,
widely spread out (not the ones on a vertical pole).
Keyboard clattering, paper shuffling and other noise interferes with it.
A microphone within an inch from your mouth still beats anything else.

That was good advice some 3 to 4 years ago.

But today local echo compensation has become so good that a headset often no longer is necessary.

Of course the conferencing system has to support echo compensation, and the audio hardware in the laptop has to be decent.

(Having some EarPods as a backup is always good, though.)
