I was already using Chrome version 86.0.4240.198 running on macOS 10.15.7.

With Firefox I get the exact same behavior as described below.

With Safari I get "To ensure a high quality experience, join Gather on Chrome or Firefox Desktop! Other browser support coming soon (but not quite yet)”
