I would wager that almost all of the OP's problem is:
  intel 2nd generation i3, from 'forever ago'.

yea that box is going to have problems doing anything current.
the WFH shift taught a bunch of folks this lesson: "If your wfh
machine is not a current machine you're gonna have a bad day"
