I'm using a 2nd gen i7, also from "forever ago", without much trouble.  Actually I'm finding gather.town to be more of a resource hog than Meetecho, just moving little avatars around on a tile-based background..

Perhaps it helps that it's a Mac with a dGPU fitted.  Intelgrated graphics has always been "problematic" in a number of different ways.
