Only George Soros can beat the system. The rest of us have to pay the
points.

I find the worst deals usually to be changing currency at airport kiosks
and hotel desk, and the best being cash withdrawal from ATM but check
that your brand name (Visa or whatever) is in the network to minimize
fees. Paying with a credit card in local currency is on the good side.
Most important: never trade both ways, i.e. don't end up with excess
local currency that you then exchange back to home currency, because you
pay those points twice. Advice I got was to pay off a portion of the
hotel bill with your leftover local cash, retaining what you need for
the taxi, and settle the rest of the bill on the credit card.

Finally, any remaining local cash should be spent at the airport bar.
