There are different kinds of meeting space. We always have hallway 
space, though at times it has felt like we should have had more. E.g., 
chairs would be useful at times.

Then we have private meeting rooms. Using these does require AD 
approval, but FWIW my bar for approving these has been essentially FCFS. 
And no, I have not felt forced to participate the ad hoc meetings. I 
only participated the ones that I actually cared about. That turned out 
to be many, but that's another story...
