Having connected in both the US and Canada many times, I can report that
CATSA is more polite than the TSA, but there's not much practical
difference between them. Yes, I've done the TSA nude-o-scope opt-out,
which was nowhere near as kinky as reported.

I agree that renting a car in Montreal is a reasonable alternative. It's
a four hour drive, starting with a slog through Montreal city traffic, but
that's a lot shorter than the ten hours from Toronto. Avis has an office
in the Hilton next door to the conference centre, Hertz has one on the
Cote de Palais in the old city which is walkable.

Of course. It's a regional airport, it has service from hubs in the
northeast.

R's,
John
