Both Quantas and Air Canada fly out of Terminal D.

I go through that airport coming from South America about once a month.

If you have checked bags, you will need to pick them up and clear customs.

There are two lines one for Americans/Canadians and one for everyone else.

The everyone else line can be a hour.

If you have a close connection talk to the gate agent when you get off the flight and they can expedite you through customs.
Look for them on the bridge or right after.

The limiting factor is probably getting and rechecking your bag. You can ask for a priority baggage tag from Quantas if you explain the situation.

You need to clear security to get back in, look for a priority line, show that you have a short connection.

I can normally do a connection in 2h changing terminals.

Have your US transit visa ready.

Good luck.

Passport control at DFW has historically not been too bad, but the last few times I've been through it took much longer (on the order of an hour). It all depends on how many flights arrive at the same time. It's worse now with most of the international flights coming to one terminal. Baggage claim in terminal D is usually pretty quick, but can suck in the other terminals.

It's not at all unusual for one line to be long and the next one short. (I'm not sure if international connections go through the same security checkpoints as everyone else--living near DFW I never actually connect through it. )
