+1.  That's been my experience for the last 35 years and very early on Canadian 
collegues advised me, too, to use the word 'meeting'.

However, saying "meeting" isn't always a free pass and they probe deeper.  After 
all, a meeting could be a business meeting to sign a sales agreement.

So it often helps to say something "international meeting of an Internet 
technical standards group".  It doesn't fall trippingly off the tongue, but it 
seems to be helpful.
