Hi,

Eventhough one will have to pass US immigration even in the transit case, I believe there are now places (some terminal(s) at SFO?) where you don't have to enter the public area when moving to your next flight.

The difference between a transit visa and a visitors visa is that for the transit you have to show that you have a outbound flight.

You are also limited to a very short stay.

Both release you into the unsecured public area.   They just will bar you if you overstay a transit visa.

A friend of mine who works for the NZ Gov and normally travels on his Gov work visa, got into trouble in the US when he was traveling to Europe and changed planes in the US.  Apparently because he wasn't traveling for government work, he was supposed to apply for a transit or tourist visa.  It never occurred to him that his B1 visa wouldn't let him transit.   It got sorted out and he made his flight but they gave him a very hard time, taking him to a room and questioning him.

If you are not absolutely certain you don't need a visa (Canadian) then you should double check if your flight touches down in the US at all.
