Off topic - but.

There is a continuous rail line from New York to Montreal that runs roughly in parallel with the Housatonic River. It is in such disrepair that no commuter service is allowed (unsafe). Freight is allowed but due to the disrepair trains must run very slow and it is seldom used for that either. This is anecdotal but it is all too indicative of the state of rail service in the US.

BTW- There has been talk about repairing and reopening part of this line for slow moving scenic railway tourist trains mostly on weekends, but no action there either. For those familiar with the area, the unused line runs north from the Danbury station which is the last stop on a leg of the Metro North commuter service. The Danbury line runs at 25 MPH most of the way to keep noise down through residential areas and has very low ridership because it is so slow. The abandoned rail line near where I now live (not near that line) has long ago been paved and converted to a bicycle and pedestrian trail (again a tourist usage).

For those still considering the train, I noticed VIA rail is running a summer seat sale right now with 60% off fares in the Windsor - (Toronto - Ottawa - Montreal) - Quebec corridor. You'll need to book your ticket no later than July 20th for travel from July 17th to August 31st.
