Dan B. dismisses MUA and final delivery agent processing of subaddresses
as local configuration problems and asserts that list server behavior is
up to the list maintainer.

I agree that there's no need to mandate list server behavior; documenting
the possible usages of subaddresses is more than enough in that case.

However, I'd like to know the solution to the local configuration problem.  
If the ability to mix and match MUAs and delivery agents is important, then
it would seem that they need some common set of rules for interpreting the
local-part of the addresses.  What's the alternative?
