Different attendees have different takes on this.  Personally, I 
prefer generous cancel terms, and I will happily accept the risk of 
being walked (and getting a free room) as the cost of that.  I have 
also deliberately avoiding booking at the meeting rate when cancel 
terms were too nasty.

I think there is merit in Andrew Sullivan's suggestion of letting us 
self-select: have the secretariat collect, as part of registration, a 
one-bit preference for "happiness to be given a free room at another 
hotel" and provide that list to the hotel(s) if needed.
