Andrew Sullivan provided all the detail as to how it works based on his own firsthand experiences.   I do wonder if the numbers vary for conferences as to the average public.  I would think the IETF no show rate, for example, might be lower than the average no show rate.   My guess also is that they had more people from the other conference extend their stays.  As someone else noted, they aren't going to kick someone out of a room - that's guaranteed revenue. There's always a chance there will be no shows - flight delays, illness, etc.    [/MB]

If a booked person doesn't show, let the hotel charge that person a cancellation fee to cover revenue lost due to empty rooms.
[MB] They already do that - you can find any reservation has a cancel by date/time. If you don't cancel by then, they will charge you the first nights rate. [/MB]
