The reason for the sensitivity is that whilst gun crime
is thankfully very rare, knife crime, particularly for
robbery has become more common. It has got to the
point where the police, who famously went out with
no more protection than a woolen jacket, are now
required to where stab vests whenever they are
out of the station.

The famous truncheons are replaced by a longer
telescoping metal "stick" and a pepper spray.

Only specialist teams have firearms and apart
from sensitive spots like embassies and airports
they are very rarely deployed.
