On mine (also W. Wing, 12th floor) I have a little box with a cat or a
child in it (I can't really make it out), and the cat-or-child appears
or disappears or appears some moments after you press the button.  It
appears to do something.

Having been raised in Canada during the Imperial/Metric changeover, I
am fortunate in that I don't care about the number associated with a
temperature reading.
