100% cotton.  That's the principle of layers: multiple very thin 
layers trap air between them, creating insulation, but are adaptable 
by adding or removing.  Throw a long-sleeve cotton T-shirt over 
whatever short-sleeve shirt (T- or button) one is wearing for instant 
warmth.  Add a cotton undershirt underneath if extra-strength warmth 
is needed.

I suspect that would be way too hot.  Unless the rooms will be Arctic.
