Conversely, if I'd known they were coming, I would probably have
toughed out the pain a little longer to see them.  I imagine they
started not very long after I left.  Granted, I do appreciate that
sometimes keeping something a surprise is warranted, just putting it
out there as something to balance against.

This remark by Dvorak from the Symphony No 9 wikipedia page was
highly prescient:

  I am convinced that the future music of [the United States] must be
  founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the
  foundation of a serious and original school of composition, to be
  developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes
  are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and
  your composers must turn to them.
