Well, indeed. You don’t need to carry a wallet, just some cash in a front pocket.

Another perspective on this issue is that it is not the pickpockets who are taking from us (and I think the risk is little different to many other large European cites), rather we’re not giving as much to the local people as we might do at other venues. We’re enjoying excellent value food and drink, and cheap taxi fares around this beautiful city. If we were in a North American city, or perhaps London or Paris, we’d probably be spending at least $10 each more per person per day out and about, which translates to $500,000 or more of economic benefit to the city being visited. It’s a great city, a great IETF venue, and we get excellent value here.
