Hello,

Welcome to the IETF. We have recently started a mentoring program that is available for you to utilize as a new attendee. Because of the expansive nature of the IETF, the mentoring program helps serve as a guide to navigate your way through the week.

A mentor can…
Share knowledge and IETF experience
Provide insight into the unique IETF culture, and guidance on how to navigate within the organization
Identify resources and introduce you to people you may want to work with (including working group chairs and other contributors in your area of interest)
Help you understand what to expect when you speak at the microphone in a session
Do a dry run on how to present your draft to an IETF working group
Help you get involved in working on an active draft
To learn more about the program:

https://www.ietf.org/resources/mentoring-program.html

If you would like to join the program, please fill out the form in the link above and send to nkhan@amsl.com.

We have also started some new activities for mentoring. You may do these activities in addition to requesting a mentor. Please reply to this message if you wish to participate in one or more of these activities. If you are interested, you may want to respond quickly as space is limited.

1. Speed Mentoring (7 spots available - Monday morning 7:45am - 8:45am)
In this activity, you will have a chance to talk with 10 experienced IETF members for 5 minutes each. This will help to build your network of contacts at the IETF. You will be able to ask them questions about the IETF, their work, your work, or any other IETF related topic.

2. Workshop : "Journey from I-D to RFC" (10 spots available - Wed. morning 7:45am-8:45am)
This workshop will help you if you want to bring new work to the IETF or are currently working on a draft. It will be especially helpful if you are having problems or have questions. The format will be: 1/2 an hour of presentation, 15 minutes of group questions, 15 minutes one-on-one time with an experienced IETF member. You may find answers to your problems here.

3. Shadow Mentoring (flexible dates, depends on availability of mentors)
In this activity, you will shadow or go with an experienced IETF member for a few hours or a day (depending on what you both decide). You will attend the same sessions, go to lunch, and participate in their day.

Sincerely,

Naveen Khan
