And, by the way, in the beginning, depending on where you start
counting, there were BCD, BAUDOT, and a few other things,
including, arguably, Morse Code.  In a different vocabulary
consider ITU Recommendation T.50, aka International Alphabet 5
(IA5 or IRA5), whose original version corresponded to ISO 646,
whose IRV is essentially ASCII.  It wasn't designated as IA5
because "5" was a nice number -- there were four predecessors
including Recommendation S.1 for ITA2.  :-)
