In an ideal world it's not only appealing.  But in
the real world the "secret mission" of the IETF is
IMHO to protect the IANA from "patent nonsense".

It cannot work if *everybody* is free to register
new media types or URI schemes falling into various
WP:NOT categories (= "what Wikipedia is not").

And the IANA also is also not Wikipedia, it is no
dictionary of locations, encyclopedia of emoticons,
registry of vanity URI schemes, or anything else
requiring unlimited disk space or server bandwidth.
