[BA] Good point. One might not be liberal about potentially malicious activity (your spam example). Ambiguities tend to be resolved over time as standards advance. 

In terms of code complexity, “accept” may just mean “ignoring” and continuing on instead of failing. Sometimes that’s a perfectly fine approach, and one that can result in less maintenance over time. So the robustness principle doesn’t always imply a growing maintenance problem.
