If you’re thinking that SONET or Ethernet compliance testing is at all meaningful, please think again.

Those systems interoperated due to the exact same market pressures that exist at the protocol level: gear that does not interoperate gets returned.

If a vendor achieves market dominance and their implementation has ‘quirks’, the rest of the market is forced to work around those quirks.
