I don't know.  But it exists, it works, and it is available to the public.

For one thing, Thunderbird is MPL licensed open source, so the design and 
the code that implements it are available to anyone who wants to use them. 
This is an odd definition of "proprietary."

Also, "It doesn't work in my MUA" is not much of an argument.  It's 
unlikely that my MUA (alpine) will implement whatever webfinger thing you 
propose so by that arguement we're all wasting our time.

Not to repeat myself, but the Mozilla thing exists, is implemented in at 
least one fairly popular MUA, and has code available.

I suppose I could talk to people at Microsoft and Google and see if they'd 
be interested if we came up with something.  What's your plan?
