I think the big elephant in the (Multicast-)room is how to do it in
practice. Control-Plane protocols don't matter if you have no good
Data-Plane.

I have seen quite a few SMF (RFC 6621) implementations, and all of
them use the (in my opinion) horrible Raw-Socket method. Which means
they integrate badly with existing network setups (among other
problems with SMF itself).

I have thought about using tun/tap interfaces combined with kernel
multicast routing but never got to the point of implementing it
(because the linux kernel multicast API is not nice).
