GRE encapsulation header can be used for notifying user-plane related
hints to a GRE tunnel peer. For example, RFC2890 carries a key sequence
extension which is used for overlapping IP use-cases and the corresponding
control plane signaling is in MIP4, MIPv6, PMIPv6, GTP and IKEv2
protocols. There is no general Vendor-specific extension support for GRE.
However, there have been previous attempts, but the IETF did not agree for
vendor-specific/experimental extensions to GRE or to ND (Ex:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-gundavelli-6man-ipv6-nd-vendor-spec-optio
ns-00, https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-song-gre-tlv-extension-00). Now,
if there is a need to carry additional hints in user plane, GRE extensions
can be proposed and INT area is a great start as it already looking at
many GRE extensions.
