Ok, I've now had a look -- and RFC 7629 is interesting.  A couple questions:

  (1) What's the recommended way to send a timestamped packet over a tunnel?
  (2) What's the recommended way to send vendor-specific or experimental
      data over a tunnel?
  (3) Are there any open-source implementations one could build on?
