afaik, the main issue I got with caldav is about the lack of tombstones.

during sync process in the funambol-caldav connector I save a map of 
(href,etag) to be re-used each time.

a nice feature would be a getDeletedEvents from server: this would enable the 
possibilty to easily synchronize by time-range.
