use different (a) modulation type, (b) modulation parameters, or (c) FEC 
(which can also affect the bit rate).  Or do you mean a generalization 
of the "signal type" to include these new fields for a "light path" (or 
whatever we choose or are allowed to call it). And this information is, 
in effect, lower layer information and hence appropriate to the WSON 
discussions.
