I'm forwarding this from the SNMP mailing list to make sure the focused group
gets it, too.

Bob,

Sorry to drag you back to previous responsibilities, especially with your
new snmp2 chair responsibilites, but I have an new interest in your RS-232
MIB. This new interest is related to previous mail concerning out-of-band
management through console ports, but related to inband management of the
device's console ports.

I would like to "do the right thing" and use a standard MIB to manage my
device's console ports, but I need one more leaf in the RS-232 MIB. Under
the rs232PortTable, I'd like to add an rs232PortFunction or
rs232PortApplication (read-write) leaf, so that I may remotely configure
the console ports to perform different applications or functions (i.e.
terminal, out-of-band mgmt, proxy, etc.).

By refering to my trusty copy of The Simple Times, Dave Perkins tells me
that RFC1317 is at Proposed status. Can we add one very useful leaf at
this time? I'd hate to publish an enterprise MIB with a single leaf when
adding one leaf could provide useful instrumentation for others as well.

Thanks,
Dave Cullerot
