Subject: Working Group Status

To the Area Director and the Working Group, from the Working Group Chair.

Although several individuals want to see the work completed, and a few were
willing to work hard to that end, the Chassis MIB Working Group was unable to
reach consensus by its 5 July 1993 deadline.

I regret that this work did not complete, especially considering my own lack
of contribution. I continue to believe that a Chassis MIB is needed to
resolve the problem of identifying multiple instances of MIBs such as the
Repeater MIB. I also believe that a Chassis MIB that enables a general
chassis drawing application might have encouraged general-purpose application
development, but there has been little success in encouraging such work with
any MIB other than RMON.
