Hi all,

We have sketched this draft as a proof of concept and would be really
interested in your opinion as it touches on some of CoAP building blocks
for content identification and negotiation.

A bit of context to (hopefully) help you understand the reasoning behind
the choices made in the proposal:

* EAT media types [1] are parametrised on a "profile", and we expect
  these profiles to be many.
* Content formats scale linearly with the number of profiles: each time
a new EAT profile is defined, a new content format needs minting.
* This (potentially) creates pressure on the C-F registry. Note that we
cannot predict how many will be minted, it depends on how popular EAT
gets. Although, note also we expect CoRIM to be similar (i.e.,
profile based), so the thing is coming from multiple directions. Ah,
and TPM attestation messages would be next – although in that case we
know upfront how big the set is.
* We want to avoid as much as possible red tape around EAT profiles
definition. In particular, profile identifiers are not registered
(they are URIs and OIDs). Having to go through IANA to get a CoAP
content format goes counter the philosophical point we are trying to
  make.

One could say: who cares? Shut up and grab your C-F code-point, it’s a
(relatively) cheap operation.

Or, we could solve the problem for EAT only, by specifying an
EAT-specific option to carry the profile identifier.

Or, as this draft puts forward, we could solve the problem for *all*
parametrised media types, include EAT’s. And while we are at it, we
improve CoAP's content negotiation allowing multiple Accept values in
the same request.

What could possibly go wrong? :-)

Cheers, thanks!

Abstract:
This document specifies a "parametrized" CoAP Content-Format data
item that allows supplementing a Content-Format with additional media
   type parameters.

This document also defines two new CoAP Options, Parmetrized-Content-
Format and Parametrized-Multi-Valued-Accept, that build upon the
"parametrized" Content-Format data item to work around some of the
limitations of the existing Accept and Content-Format Options.
