IETF DFS WG members: Let's meet in Santa Fe and discuss recent progress in Internet-capable distributed file systems. Transarc recently released a set of documents describing the components of AFS Version 3. (See attached messages.) Although quite voluminous, I hope we can review them, with an eye toward consideration of whether it is appropriate for corresponding RFCs to be forthcoming. I am assured that Transarc will be represented at the meeting. It would also be useful to learn what we can about congestion control in NCS 2.0, the RPC layer on which OSF/DCE/DFS (a.k.a. AFS 4) is based. I am hopeful that some folks from Sun might also attend, and that they might be able and willing to describe developments on the NFS front. If there is time, I will describe some of the recent work done here to make RX (the RPC layer underlying AFS 3) perform better over slow and congested networks. A preliminary write-up of this work can be found in /afs/umich.edu/user/h/o/honey/papers/rxp/rx.ps, available via AFS, or via anonymous FTP from CITI.UMICH.EDU, or via NFS from EH.CITI.UMICH.EDU. peter ------- Forwarded Messages Date: Tue, 3 Sep 1991 08:31:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Ed._Zayas@transarc.com To: +dist+/afs/transarc.com/usr/afsps/cs/mlists/infoafs@transarc.com Message-Id: <Icks2YP0BwwbAYv2El@transarc.com> Subject: All AFS-3 prog specs released! Folks... The set of AFS-3 programmer's specification documents have now been released, and are publicly available in the GCO cell. For those who forgot, you may access the .dvi and PostScript files for these papers in the following directories: /afs/grand.central.org/darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/ archov - Architectural Overview bsrv - BOS Server fscm - File Server/Cache Manager psrv - Protection Server rx - Rx, LWP vvl - Volume/Volume Location Server As usual, please send me comments, questions, suggestions, et cetera. For those of you who like pretty, shrink-wrapped and professionally-printed versions of documents, the set will be also available in this cool hard-copy format. Please see the post by Dawn Hinton dated 26 August for the gory details. Please note that *one more* document in the series will be produced. Its title will be: AFS-3 Programmer's Reference: Authentication Server Interface Its release date has not yet currently been determined, but I'll post updates about it here as we have them. May you find these documents useful! I don't believe I've properly advertised the fact that access to the grand.central.org cell is also possible via anonymous FTP. People who are not yet running AFS and wish to rummage through the contents of GCO should ftp to grand.central.org (IP address 192.54.226.100) and log in as ``anonymous'', giving your name/affiliation as a password. You'll find yourself sitting in the equivalent of the /afs/grand.central.org AFS directory. From this base, you can cd around, find what you need, and copy it over. For example, let's say you want to grab the AFS-3 File Server/Cache Manager programming spec PostScript file. You might type in something like the following after setting up your FTP connection: ftp> ls darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/fscm 200 PORT command successful 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file list darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/fscm/fscm-ispec.ps darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/fscm/fscm-ispec.dvi 226 Transfer complete remote: darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/fscm 97 bytes received in 0.45 seconds (0.21 Kbytes/sec) ftp> ftp> get darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/fscm/fscm-ispec.ps 200 PORT command successful 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/fscm/fscm-ispec.ps (771321 bytes). 226 Transfer complete local: fscm-ispec.ps remote: darpa/doc/afs/specs/progint/fscm/fscm-ispec.ps 784710 bytes received in 14 seconds (55 Kbytes/sec) ftp> There is a limit of three concurrent anonymous FTP connections to grand.central.org, so if you can't get on right away, please keep trying until you grab a slot. By the way, the X11R5 distribution has been opened up to the public this morning as of 9:00am (from directory /afs/grand.central.org/pub/X11R5), so we expect the anonymous FTP slots to be a scarce resource for a few days. Please let me know if you encounter any problems with this method of access, or if you have comments and/or suggestions. Ed. ------- End of Forwarded Messages
