I can see that this could be really useful.

For example say I have Unix and NT boxes sharing a subnet, but the
configuration for the Unix machines for DNS is different to that of the NT
boxes.

I could use the vendor portion of the MAC address to decide if I want to
service the DHCP request - given the Unix (as long as it's not PC Unix) is
most likely to have a different vendors Ethernet adapter (e.g. SUN rather
than Compaq[0080F5])

For a switched environment this may become more relevant given that you may be
less likely to have a different physical subnet based on hardware type.

What did you have in mind - assigning addresses from a different range
depending on the first three bytes of the MAC address or something?
