X-Comment: Discussion of DHCP for IPv4
I can see that this could be really useful. For example say I have Unix and NT boxes sharing a subnet, but the configuration for the Unix machines for DNS is different to that of the NT boxes. I could use the vendor portion of the MAC address to decide if I want to service the DHCP request - given the Unix (as long as it's not PC Unix) is most likely to have a different vendors Ethernet adapter (e.g. SUN rather than Compaq[0080F5]) For a switched environment this may become more relevant given that you may be less likely to have a different physical subnet based on hardware type. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Luke Roberts Internet: lroberts@csfp.csfb.com PC Engineering Telephone: +44 (0)171 516 2260 Credit Suisse Financial Products 1 Cabot Square, London E14 4QJ ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Re: DHCP & MAC Address Grouping Author: DHCPV4 (INTERNET.DHCPV4) at SSWGATE Date: 24/05/96 13:20 From: Ted Lemon <mellon@fugue.com> To: Multiple recipients of list <dhcp-v4@bucknell.edu> Subject: Re: DHCP & MAC Address Grouping > Are there any products out there which supports the logical grouping of MAC > Addresses, thus allowing the dynamic assignment of IP-Address from a range > to this group (using either DHCP or BOOTP) ? What did you have in mind - assigning addresses from a different range depending on the first three bytes of the MAC address or something? _MeloN_
