We selected a default lease length of 21 days, however, most of our clients reinitialize their stack at least once per day (via an automatic mechanism in the client that randomizes reinitializations during the 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. window). This default lease value is a compromise that allows the majority of users to take vacations without their assigned IP address changing, but permits less-than-30-day recovery of dis-used leases. For mobile users (a group we currently do not support) the lower bound on lease lengths would depend on the update cycle for DNS -- many servers require a DNS entry for a client that agrees with the server request -- so very short lease times could present an unwelcome burden on DNS. I would be reluctant to allow a really long maximum lease time because of the frequency of office moves and the need to eventually recover disused addresses, but I am not really able to quantify a maximum time either. --Barr Hibbs Pacific*Bell 370 Third Street, Room 207 San Francisco, CA 94107-1279 +1-(415)-545-1576 rbhibbs@pacbell.com ---------- From: dhcp-v4 To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Choosing length of lease Date: Fri, 8 Nov, 1996 6:35 (1) At your own site, how long do you make leases and why did you choose this time? (2) Are there lease-lengths that you would consider to be a lower-bound or upper-bound for any ALL practical uses? If so, what would you be trying to avoid by staying above/below this bound.
