It's a list of problems, not solutions, so there aren't benefits and/or advantages.

It's not intended as a dead-end, either.  It is intended as a reference document for solution documents to point at.  Warren add numbering to the list so the problems could be referenced more easily by solutions documents, such as draft-ietf-dnsop-alt-tld-08
