Magic numbers are messy.
Zero-length option preferred, same as the outbound request.
Need explicit statement somewhere that zero-length response means that
IXFR, NOTIFY, and UPDATE are not supported.

Not keen on the implementation-specific blob idea, which is of little
use to the general user. Implementers and power users will already
have more appropriate debugging tools.
