DNS-SD (RFC 6763) is merely a convention for what the contents of the PTR, SRV, and TXT records mean. RFC 6763 does not in any way change how DNS records are queried, resolved, cached, or delivered. To see exactly what I’m saying, take a look at the “IETF Terminal Room Printer Discovery Walk-Through” in the Service Discovery Road Map draft: <https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-cheshire-dnssd-roadmap-03#appendix-A> Or, for a quicker demo, just manually add “stuartcheshire.org” in the DNS search list on your iPhone, then when you tap the AirPrint button in any app, anywhere on the planet with Internet access, you’ll see my home printer as an available print destination. (Feel free to send me a friendly note!) That’s all done just using the “public DNS”. No changes to the public DNS were needed to make it work. The DNS records describing the print service are all originated from a standard authoritative DNS server, and can be accessed directly from that authoritative DNS server or via whatever recursive resolver you choose to use for all your other DNS queries.
