Sharon Goldberg's presentation on the Academic's guide to the IETF was part of ANRW 2018. It is in the first ten minutes of the opening session...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSvZcMAcC_0
This was a really good talk that I encourage anyone to take a quick look at...

I think it is an idea worth exploring in more detail. But, I also think we need to prioritize the activities for which we are already trying to move forward. I think you should send and email scoping it further, and we can add it at the end of the agenda at our next meeting to get additional feedback.

Karen

I think this is a good idea. There was an “IETF for Academics” given by (I think) Sharon Goldberg a couple of years ago that might be useful; it was during one of the co-located SIGCOMM meetings.

I also think we need a video version, which we can point people to who aren’t present but are IETF-curious as it were. And maybe we could have some kind of cheap one-day registration for members of other orgs who don’t participate, usable only once?

Subject: [Emo-dir] Outreach

An activity that will greatly benefit the long-term success of the IETF is outreach to broaden the range of active participants beyond the tech and telecoms sectors, both into other sectors and in particular into civil society. From some informal conversations, I believe that a short (say half-day) program running during in-person IETF meetings would be an excellent way to explain why such organisations should engage.

I’d be happy to expand on this on the mailing list and/or at the next virtual or in-person meeting. If there is support in principle, I’d be willing to put effort into building interest with potential participants as well as in scoping out the content, targeting IETF 115 as a pilot.

Is this something that would be of interest to others?
