I think one of the most important points, I think Eric brought it up, is to discuss the moderation issue at a different place than the lists where we do work.

As we kept seeing with the “censorship” and “inclusive language” discussions, it destroys the list for actual work and newcomers get the impression it’s just many old people screaming at clouds. A moderator needs to be able to stop that in time and have a discussion with people about this elsewhere. 

Elsewhere can still be a public list so transparency is still in place for those who want to look and discuss there. This would have saved the ietf@ietf.org list (and arguable would have prevented a downturn in last-call comments which the split of the ietf list seems to have caused (based on my impression not verified by statistics))
