PROPOSAL TO DECLARE OBSOLETE MIL-STD-1777, -1778, -1780, -1781 AND
-1782 KNOWN AS THE DOD PROTOCOLS

Reply by 093094. POC: Mr. Gregor D. Scott, (908) 532-7726.

Proposals to Declare Obsolete MIL-STD-1777, -1778, -1780, -1781 and
-1782, Known as the DOD Protocols, POC: Gregor Scott, (908) 532-7726.

On 28 July 1994, the DOD's Data Communications Protocol Standards
(DCPS) Technical Management Panel (DTMP) approved for use a set of DOD
Standardized Profiles (DSPs).

The DTMP is responsible for establishing DSPs, based on the
international and national standards, adding any necessary military
enhancements if required. The Defense Information Systems Agency
(DISA) Center for Standards (CFS) sponsors the DTMP.

The approved DSPs use for base standards the current Internet Protocol
Suite (IPS), as defined by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB)
Standards (STDs) and Request for Comments (RFCs), and Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI) standards. These DSPs are: MIL-STD-2045-14502
Internet Transport Profile for DoD Communications, MIL-STD-2045-17504
Internet File Transfer Profile for DoD Communications,
MIL-STD-2045-17505 Internet Domain Name Service (DNS) Profile for DoD
Communicatons, MIL-STD-2045-17506 Internet Remote Login Profile for
DoD Communications, MIL-STD-2045-17507 Internet Network Management
Profile for DoD Communications.

To access the profiles online: ftp to nemo.ncsl.nist.gov
(129.6.58.136) login anonymous, password your _name@your_address, cd
pub/oiw/osetc/internet_profiles. The formats for the files are
WordPerfect 5.1, text, and postscript.

Since the above DSPs are now available for DOD use, the DTMP is
considering declaring obsolete the following MIL-STDs: MIL-STD-1777
Internet Protocol (IP). Replaced by MIL-STD-2045-14502. MIL-STD-1780
File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Replaced by MIL-STD-2045-17504.
MIL-STD-1781 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). Replaced by
MIL-STD-2045-17503. MIL-STD-1782 Telnet Protocol and Options.
Replaced by MIL-STD-2045-17506. The above MIL-STDs, approved in 1983
and 1984, are based on RFCs modified or made obsolete by newer RFCs.

Interested parties should submit comments by 30 September 1994. The
DTMP shall consider any comments received at its Working Group 1 (WG1)
18, 19 October 1994 meeting, located at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. All
organizations participating in this effort must do so at their own
expense. Neither the DISA CFS nor other government organizations will
be liable for reimbursing expenses for any participants. Send comments
to Director, Joint Interoperability and Engineering Organization
(JIEO), Attn: TBBD (Gregor Scott), Fort Monmouth, NJ 07703-5613; (908)
