FWIW, 

I am a recent implementor who has participated for a little over a year. I do not feel this list is in any way a high-volume channel, although it’s certainly true that in the case of a highly-debated topic, there is a brief, but manageable, spike. I imagine that anyone with the technical expertise necessary to participate in this forum also understands how to setup email filters. 

Overall, I appreciate the high-quality, thorough, and well structured comments that are sent to this list. I personally feel that github notifications would be a poor substitution.
