(And for the record, I am happy to put out a revision based on abarth's
proposal. I am also happy to try to re-write it in a format that people find
easier to grok, as opposed to the current handshake's "read 1 byte, call it
X" style. I will probably mess something up in the first attempt at doing
that, and would appreciate people's patience and input in that process.)
