I agree - but I still don't think we should mandate compression support.

As a professional programmer I still like to have the ability to
just crack open a socket (eg from a low capability device or even
just from a test harness) and simply talk websocket.

However, I would like to see optional compression supported
in the base protocol as standardized by the IETF.

So at this stage of the process, we should be considering if
we have consensus to make compression a requirement or not.
