Since the capitilization convention should be revered for VMS let me suggest
instead you explicitly use the old term: user ftp, or its newer analogy: ftp
client when discussing ftp, the program.

replace references to FTP, the protocol, with "the ftp protocol" or "the
protocl" or a more descriptive term where applicable.
