I also think we are wasting a lot of words on this. If this is a technical detail, why are certain people so afraid of changing it? Why the panicky resistance to making what you yourself are characterizing as a minor issue?

If, as Jon suggests, ICANN will be deeply offended if IETF asks to keep that technical detail consistent, perhaps it is more than a detail? 

You can't have it both ways. If the whole issue is trivial, it is trivial to ask for the change and there's no reason not to. If on the other hand the request for the domain and mark is disruptive and destabilizing, then the issue is more than some trivial technical detail.
