Asunto: Discussion about connection and connectivity

Hi All,

These days we have discussed some important concepts, “connection”, “connectivity” and “connect”, with Pedro and Bert. Opinions are meaningful and worthy of consideration further. So I sum up the different views to make the topic clearer. Please point out it with no hesitations if I am biased.

In fact, the core of this topic is what is the real meaning of “connection” and “connectivity” (I think, “Connect” = “Connectivity”), and how to choose them when you want to express the communication.

In my very humble opinion

“Connection” refers to something ‘real’ or ‘physical’. Therefore, I see the connection as between two sites, with specific parameters like Bandwidth, Delay, etc.
“Connectivity” refers to something more “ethereal”, without those specific parameters. Like I want that packets sent by element A are delivered to element B, but just that. No assumptions on Bandwidth or Delay. However, connectivity is a very long work, therefore I’d go for “connect” as the action of transferring packets as opposed to “connection” with specific parameters.

So I think I’m in less opposition to Opinion 2 :-) although I struggle with the wording…
